The Best RPGs You Can Actually Finish in Under 50 Hours

Most modern RPGs assume you have 100+ hours to spare. Most of us do not. Here are the genuinely great RPGs that respect a normal life and can be properly finished in under 50 hours.

Modern RPGs have a problem. They have all decided that 100-hour playtimes are a feature, when for most of us they are a bug. I love RPGs but I cannot commit 200 hours to every Bethesda epic. So here are the great ones that respect your time.

Selection criteria: full main story under 50 hours, satisfying conclusion, not feeling like you skipped half the game.

1. Disco Elysium

Main story length: About 30-35 hours.

This is a detective RPG with no combat. Almost all dialogue. The writing is some of the best in any game ever made — funny, sad, philosophical. Your character is a wreck of a detective trying to solve a murder in a politically chaotic city.

Why it is great: Every choice matters. The dialogue is unbelievably good. The setting is unlike anything else in gaming.

Why you should buy it: If you read books for fun, this is your RPG.

2. Mass Effect 2 (Legendary Edition)

Main story length: About 30-35 hours including some side missions.

The middle entry in the original Mass Effect trilogy. You recruit a team for a suicide mission. Choices in Mass Effect 1 carry over. Choices in this one carry to Mass Effect 3.

Why it is great: Tight pacing, memorable characters, the legendary "loyalty mission" structure where each squadmate gets their own focused storyline.

Why you should buy it: It is widely considered one of the best RPGs ever made and you can actually finish it in a couple weekends.

3. The Outer Worlds

Main story length: About 25-30 hours.

From the Fallout: New Vegas team. A Western RPG set in a corporate-controlled space colony. Funny, focused, with meaningful choices throughout.

Why it is great: Captures the New Vegas writing style without the bloat. Combat is fine, dialogue is great, world is interesting.

Why you should buy it: If you bounced off Starfield because of the scope, this is the focused RPG you wanted.

4. Citizen Sleeper

Main story length: About 12-15 hours.

An indie RPG about a digital consciousness in a stolen android body, living on a derelict space station. Dice-based mechanics. Beautiful writing.

Why it is great: Tells a complete, moving story in a short playtime. Choices have weight without being overwhelming.

Why you should buy it: A short, beautiful experience that respects your time and your intelligence.

5. Pentiment

Main story length: About 20-25 hours across three acts.

From Obsidian. A medieval murder mystery RPG set in 16th century Bavaria. The visual style is illuminated manuscripts.

Why it is great: Unique setting, deep historical research, choices that affect a small community across decades.

Why you should buy it: Nothing else looks or feels like it. Easily Obsidian's most distinctive game.

6. NieR: Automata

Main story length: About 30 hours for the full multiple-ending experience.

A philosophical action RPG about androids fighting a war between humanity and machines. The story has multiple endings that change your understanding of everything.

Why it is great: Combat is great, music is genuinely amazing, the story keeps recontextualizing itself.

Why you should buy it: It does things narratively no other game tries. Worth experiencing for that alone.

7. Final Fantasy IX (or any classic FF you missed)

Main story length: About 35-45 hours depending on side content.

Old school turn-based JRPG. Beautiful prerendered backgrounds. Surprisingly mature themes for a Final Fantasy.

Why it is great: A complete, satisfying RPG that does not assume you will play it for 200 hours.

Why you should buy it: If you want a classic JRPG experience without the modern bloat, this is one of the most beloved entries in the series.

What I left off

Some games people will ask about that did not make the list:

  • Skyrim, Fallout 4, Starfield: Too long, too padded for this list.
  • Elden Ring, Dark Souls: Great games but they take 50-100+ hours to do properly.
  • Baldur's Gate 3: Phenomenal but a 100+ hour commitment.
  • Persona 5: One of my favorite games ever but it is 100+ hours easy.
  • Witcher 3: At least 80 hours for the main story alone.

The takeaway

RPGs do not have to eat your year. The seven above prove that complete, satisfying, meaningful RPG experiences can fit in under 50 hours. That is two or three weeks of evening play.

If you have been avoiding the genre because you do not have 200 hours to spare, start with any of these. You will get a full RPG experience without the time commitment that has scared most adults out of the genre.
